HISTORIA
Durante más de 44 años, el Programa de Voluntarios para Personas Mayores y Jubilados de los Condados Rurales de Nevada (RSVP) ha estado sirviendo a los condados rurales de Nevada con oportunidades de voluntariado comunitario. En 1973 RSVP se estableció como una corporación 501 (c) (3) sin fines de lucro auto-patrocinada, y comenzó el primer programa rural RSVP como satélite de Washoe County RSVP. En 1974, se lanzó un programa RSVP de 5 condados rurales gracias a una subvención al Consejo de Gobiernos de la Cuenca del RÃo Carson como patrocinador; y para 1988 - ACTION otorgó una subvención RSVP de 15 condados rurales a la ciudad de Carson City como patrocinador. En 1993, el patrocinio de los 15 condados rurales de Nevada bajo una agencia sin fines de lucro, el Programa RSVP de los condados rurales de Nevada, Inc. fue otorgado por ACTION. Este mismo año, el Programa de Voluntarios Americanos Mayores (OVAP) fue reautorizado como Cuerpo Nacional de Voluntarios Mayores por la Ley de Fideicomiso Nacional y Comunitario.

RSVP es actualmente parte de Senior Corps y está parcialmente financiado por la Corporación para el Servicio Nacional y Comunitario, la agencia federal que lidera los esfuerzos de servicio, voluntariado y otorgamiento de subvenciones en los Estados Unidos.

Durante más de cuatro décadas, RSVP ha asegurado con éxito fondos adicionales a través de la solicitud de apoyo y subvenciones individuales, corporativas y de fundaciones para hacer crecer la base de apoyo filantrópico y aumentar la conciencia pública de RSVP y su misión, lo que ha permitido que miles de personas mayores permanezcan en casa y fuera de costosas instituciones. El resultado ha sido millones de dólares en ahorros para los contribuyentes para el cuidado a largo plazo, y les permitió a estas personas mayores vivir sus vidas con dignidad en sus propios hogares, donde son los más felices y saludables y siguen siendo parte de su comunidad.

Sus primeras raÃces, que comenzaron en el servicio a los cinco condados rurales del estado, han crecido, con un programa sólido y una gestión financiera para incluir 15 de los 17 condados de Nevada: Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, Washoe y pino blanco. La población total de estos condados rurales es 327,830, de los cuales el 31% son personas mayores de 55 años de edad o más, el 26% de los cuales viven bajo las pautas federales de pobreza publicadas según la Oficina de Demógrafos del Estado de Nevada.

La misión de RSVP es proporcionar programas de voluntariado que salvan vidas que ayuden a las personas mayores a mantener su dignidad, autorrespeto e independencia.

El año pasado, 1,000 voluntarios registrados RSVP en la zona rural de Nevada brindaron más de 94,000 horas de servicio voluntario a más de 9,200 clientes, incluidas 100 agencias comunitarias públicas y sin fines de lucro, y la población de ancianos de Nevada. RSVP ha desempeñado un papel de liderazgo de servicios sociales vital en las comunidades a las que servimos. RSVP continúa expandiendo su función para ayudar no solo a las personas mayores y veteranos de bajos ingresos y confinados a sus hogares en nuestras áreas de servicio, sino también a todas las personas necesitadas para mejorar la calidad de vida de todos los ciudadanos.
Volunteer drivers assist clients at the door to and from their home, and accompany clients in picking up their prescriptions, out to lunch or the senior center, and to share conversation. Often, volunteers wait, if necessary, in the doctor’s office or other destination points.

RSVP’s on-call, on-demand transit service requires a call-in advance notice to schedule rides, M-F, between the hours of 8am to 4pm. The process begins when the client telephones the RSVP Transportation Coordinator or rural counties’ Volunteer Field Representatives to schedule rides with one of RSVP’s volunteer drivers.

Volunteers provide rides that would otherwise not be available in their area, using their personal vehicles. Volunteer drivers receive on-going training, mileage reimbursements at $.45 per mile, and are honored each year during RSVP’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Event.

RSVP partners with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to offer volunteers specialized drivers’ training to ensure they are capable of providing transportation services for our clients.

Program History
Rural RSVP has a strong background in volunteer transportation program services which has been a continuous thread of our independent living programs to improve the quality of life and independence of seniors living in Nevada’s rural communities.

In the early 1980’s, RSVP received its first vehicle for the Volunteer Transportation Program through a vehicle donation from the Carson City Rotary Club to help area seniors with rides to the doctor. Since this time, in addition to RSVP designated vehicles, volunteers have continued to utilize their own vehicles for the Program.

RSVP received Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) vehicles in 1999, 2001, 2007 and in 2010 to enhance its capability to serve elders in Carson City and the region. Storey County dedicated a van for RSVP’s use in the River District in 2006.

In 2015 RSVP was awarded a grant from NDOT to acquire a handicapped-accessible van for the County of Elko. Additional NDOT grants followed for the acquisition of new vans: in 2016 for Winnemucca and Pahrump; in 2018 for the communities of White Pine, Ely, Lincoln and Caliente.

In 2017 the organization received a vehicle donation from Carson City Toyota under its Dealer Match Program; and a GMC van from the Humboldt Family Resource Center. Over the years, RSVP has been supported by the Nevada Aging & Disability Services Division (ADSD) with grant funding for match, fuel, maintenance and mileage reimbursement for volunteers. Since 2016, RSVP has secured additional match for vehicles through Foundation resources. RSVP currently has a fleet of 13 vehicles.

FY 2019 RSVP awaits delivery of three NDOT vans for the communities of Fernley, Hawthorne and Tonopah.
